E-Harbours was a transnational European Union-funded project (INTERREG IVB North Sea Region) that ran until the early 2010s to promote sustainable energy logistics in harbour cities.

Its core focus was to transform energy networks in industrial harbour areas into sustainable, accessible “smart grid” models. The initiative achieved this by:

  • Integrating renewable energy sources (e.g., wind, solar, and industrial waste heat) into the local grid.
  • Developing virtual power plants that could manage flexible energy consumption from industrial users.
  • Promoting electric mobility—like electric cars and boats—to connect clean transportation with large-scale renewable energy.

The project set innovative energy standards to feed into broader EU and national climate policies, guiding decision-makers on how to optimize energy data and usage in high-intensity port environments.
