Company overview and current status

Integrys Energy Services was an American electricity and natural gas supplier serving households, businesses, industrial customers and public sector organisations. Its retail energy business became part of Constellation in November 2014, followed by a transition to the Constellation brand. The Integrys name is therefore mainly encountered in historical company information, contracts and regulatory records.

What did Integrys Energy Services do?

Integrys supplied electricity and natural gas in competitive American energy markets. It also offered structured energy products and purchasing strategies to help customers manage their energy requirements. Its customers ranged from individual households to commercial and industrial organisations.

In these markets, customers can choose an energy supplier where local rules permit. The supplier provides the energy commodity and agrees supply prices and contract terms, while the local utility continues to deliver electricity or gas and maintain the network. Choosing a competitive supplier does not change the organisation responsible for power lines, pipelines or outage response.

Integrys also participated in municipal electricity aggregation, including a contract with the City of Chicago. These arrangements bring participating customers together under a collective supply agreement.

What happened to Integrys Energy Services?

Exelon announced an agreement to acquire Integrys Energy Services for its Constellation business in July 2014. The announced terms were US$60 million for the retail operations, plus adjusted net working capital. The transaction excluded Integrys’ energy assets, primarily solar, which remained with Integrys Energy Group.

Constellation announced completion of the acquisition on 3 November 2014. It said the Integrys business would begin moving to the Constellation brand, existing customer contracts would be honoured, and the acquisition would cause no interruption to customers’ energy service. These assurances concerned the transition at that time.

How is Integrys connected to Constellation today?

Constellation’s published Connecticut regulatory records identify Constellation Energy Services, Inc. as formerly Integrys Energy Services, Inc. This explains why the Integrys name can still appear in older licensing documents and supplier records.

At the time of the 2014 acquisition, Constellation belonged to Exelon. Constellation subsequently separated from Exelon and launched as an independent, publicly traded energy company in February 2022. Descriptions of Constellation as an Exelon subsidiary therefore relate to its earlier ownership.

What about Integrys Energy Group?

Integrys Energy Services and Integrys Energy Group were separate parts of the same former corporate structure.Energy Services was the competitive retail supply subsidiary; Energy Group was its parent company.

After the retail business had been sold to Constellation, Wisconsin Energy completed its acquisition of Integrys Energy Group on 29 June 2015, forming WEC Energy Group. Consequently, the retail supplier’s history leads to Constellation, while the former parent group’s history leads to WEC Energy Group.
