Valda Energy supplies business electricity and gas across Great Britain, with a particular focus on smaller companies. Contracted prices are individually quoted. Its published deemed rates from 5 October 2026 are 47p/kWh for electricity profile classes 1–8 and 15p/kWh for gas, plus standing charges. Half-hourly electricity has a separate schedule.
This Valda Energy review examines its published business prices, tariffs, customer feedback and contract terms. It also calculates what the published charges mean in pounds, helping you compare an offer with other business energy suppliers.
Reviewed on 16 October 2026. Published deemed rates effective from 5 October 2026. Historical benchmarks and illustrative calculations are labelled separately.
Valda Energy review: our verdict
Valda is worth including in an SME energy comparison, particularly if you want online account management or a tariff with lower standing charges. Its value depends on your individual quotation and the scope of its price protection.
The main considerations are:
- Compare the complete annual cost. A lower daily charge can be offset by a higher unit rate.
- Check which costs can change. Commodity price protection does not necessarily fix network, policy or other non-commodity costs.
- Confirm the payment arrangement. Valda’s current and older product pages describe different billing models.
- Review the meter conditions. Smart metering is central to the proposition.
- Choose renewable electricity explicitly. The standard supplier fuel mix and the renewable upgrade have different disclosures.
The review assesses published prices and terms alongside customer feedback. The most suitable offer will depend on your consumption, cash flow and need for price protection.
Who is Valda Energy?

Valda Energy business prices per kWh
Valda’s contracted business electricity and gas prices are individually quoted. There is no single national fixed-tariff price that applies to every customer.
The quotation needs to reflect your premises, consumption, meter arrangements, contract dates and chosen product. Request electricity and gas prices separately, even if you want both fuels on one account.
Published electricity price benchmarks
Valda labels these examples Q2 2026 industry estimates. They are historical benchmarks rather than current Valda offers.
| Example business | Annual use | Published unit rate | Published standing charge | Calculated annual base cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small shop, café or salon | 3,500 kWh | 26p/kWh | 60p/day | £1,129.00 |
| Restaurant, gym or office | 15,000 kWh | 24p/kWh | 175p/day | £4,238.75 |
| Warehouse or large retailer | 60,000 kWh | 24.5p/kWh | 375p/day | £16,068.75 |
Source: Valda’s published comparison page. Annual totals are our calculations from its displayed rates over 365 days, before adding taxes or further charges. Business descriptions are examples; actual consumption can differ considerably.
For the 15,000 kWh example, the calculation is:
15,000 × £0.24 + 365 × £1.75 = £4,238.75 a year.
The standing charge contributes £638.75, approximately 15.1% of that base cost. This illustrates why a headline unit price alone cannot tell you whether a quotation is good value.
For current market context, use our guide to business electricity prices, then obtain a quotation for your own supply.
What about Valda Energy business gas prices?
Valda’s published deemed gas schedule is reproduced below. Its comparison page does not provide an equivalent national table of contracted gas quotations, so we have not presented an assumed fixed gas rate as a genuine Valda offer.
When comparing business gas prices, request the unit rate in p/kWh, daily standing charge, contract duration and a written explanation of any adjustable charges. Gas uses its own consumption bands; electricity profile classes should not be used to classify a gas tariff.
Valda Energy deemed rates and standing charges
Deemed rates can apply when you take responsibility for premises already supplied by Valda without agreeing a supply contract. Valda’s current published schedule took effect on 5 October 2026.
Valda Energy electricity deemed rates
| Published electricity category | Unit rate | Standing charge | Availability charge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Profile classes 1–2 | 47p/kWh | 115p/day | Not listed |
| Profile classes 3–4 | 47p/kWh | 260p/day | Not listed |
| Profile classes 5–8 | 47p/kWh | 400p/day | Not listed |
| Low-voltage half-hourly | 52p/kWh | 1,000p/day | 9.5p/kVA/day |
| High-voltage half-hourly | 52p/kWh | 5,500p/day | 9.5p/kVA/day |
Valda Energy gas deemed rates
| Annual gas consumption | Unit rate | Standing charge |
|---|---|---|
| 0–73,200 kWh | 15p/kWh | 260p/day |
| 73,201–293,000 kWh | 15p/kWh | 360p/day |
| 293,001–732,000 kWh | 15p/kWh | 410p/day |
| 732,001–2,196,000 kWh | 15p/kWh | 460p/day |
Source for both tables: Valda’s published deemed schedule. “Not listed” means no figure is shown in that column; confirm the applicable charges for your supply. Valda’s deemed terms state that taxes and levies are additional unless it tells you otherwise.
What would those deemed rates cost annually?
These calculations hold the published prices constant for 365 days. They are annualised comparisons, not a prediction that a variable schedule will remain unchanged.
| Supply category | Annual use | Annual energy and standing-charge cost |
|---|---|---|
| Electricity, profile 3–4 | 5,000 kWh | £3,299 |
| Electricity, profile 3–4 | 25,000 kWh | £12,699 |
| Electricity, profile 3–4 | 50,000 kWh | £24,449 |
| Gas, band 1 | 20,000 kWh | £3,949 |
| Gas, band 1 | 50,000 kWh | £8,449 |
| Gas, band 2 | 100,000 kWh | £16,314 |
These are our calculations from the schedule above, excluding VAT, Climate Change Levy and any further applicable charges.
Even with no consumption, a 260p daily charge amounts to £949 over a 365-day year while liability continues. A temporary closure therefore does not necessarily remove supply costs.
Half-hourly availability charges: a worked example
For a low-voltage half-hourly supply with 100 kVA of chargeable capacity, the listed availability component would be:
100 × £0.095 × 365 = £3,467.50 a year.
At 100,000 kWh, adding the listed unit and standing charges produces a base total of £59,117.50, before taxes and other applicable charges. This calculation assumes the stated capacity is chargeable throughout the year.
For a larger supply, compare the capacity basis as carefully as the unit rate. Our guide explains maximum demand and maximum import capacity.
Are deemed and out-of-contract rates the same?
They describe different circumstances. A deemed supply commonly arises on a change of occupier without an agreed contract. An end-of-term arrangement depends on what the existing contract says.
Valda’s current SME terms describe continuation into a fixed price period after the fixed term, with advance notification of the charges. Do not automatically apply the deemed table to an expired contract: ask Valda to identify the applicable product, terms and price schedule.
See our explanation of deemed business energy contracts for the wider distinctions.
Valda Energy tariffs explained
Valda’s current comparison page lists the following main options. Availability and the exact term offered should be confirmed in your quotation.
| Product | Published term range | Main feature |
|---|---|---|
| SmartChoice | 12–60 months | Standard business energy proposition with online management |
| Standing Charge Saver | 12–60 months | Lower daily standing charge, with greater emphasis on usage |
| Valda Renewable | 12–48 months | Renewable electricity upgrade |
| Unmetered Supply | 12–60 months | Electricity for eligible unmetered connections |
Source: Valda’s current product comparison. These are product descriptions, not confirmation that every cost is fixed throughout the term.
Valda also offers a multi-site service for businesses with more than six meters. For a portfolio, request a breakdown by meter as well as the combined total: an attractive portfolio average can conceal an expensive individual location.
Standing Charge Saver and SmartChoice Zero
Standing Charge Saver is marketed towards businesses with lower consumption and offers terms from 12 to 60 months. Its published description promises a lower standing charge, rather than a universal zero daily charge. A smart meter is a product requirement.
Valda also retains a SmartChoice Zero announcement describing a 0p standing charge tariff, with the standing-charge cost incorporated into the unit rate. This establishes that the product has existed; it does not establish that every new customer can obtain it now. Ask which product is currently available and obtain its charges in writing.
When does a lower standing charge save money?
Consider two illustrative tariffs, not Valda quotations:
- Example A: 24p/kWh plus £1 per day.
- Example B: 27p/kWh plus 25p per day.
| Annual electricity use | Example A | Example B | Lower annual base cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3,000 kWh | £1,085.00 | £901.25 | B, by £183.75 |
| 10,000 kWh | £2,765.00 | £2,791.25 | A, by £26.25 |
| 25,000 kWh | £6,365.00 | £6,841.25 | A, by £476.25 |
Calculations exclude taxes and other charges. Example B saves £273.75 in annual standing charges but costs 3p more for every kWh. The break-even consumption is 9,125 kWh a year.
Below that level, B is cheaper on these assumptions. Above it, A is cheaper. The same calculation works for zero standing charge business energy: use the actual difference between the two written offers, rather than assuming the lowest daily charge wins.
Are Valda Energy tariffs fully fixed?
A fixed term is not the same as a guarantee that every part of your bill will stay unchanged.
Clause 15.6 of Valda’s May 2026 SME terms allows non-commodity cost changes during the term, while providing commodity price protection subject to the other provisions. Clause 15.7 separately permits certain increases on at least 30 days’ notice, with a corresponding right to leave. The notice-based exit right should not be assumed to cover every adjustment.
Valda’s corporate terms allow a proposal to identify particular non-commodity costs as fixed or subject to a threshold, but retain exceptions for methodology or rate changes. The individual proposal therefore matters.
Ask for a written breakdown of what can change, how changes are calculated and whether any limit applies. This is particularly useful when comparing a cheaper initial offer with a quotation that includes wider price protection.
For perspective, an additional £1 per day would add £365 a year, while an additional 1p/kWh would add £250 a year at 25,000 kWh. These are sensitivity calculations, not a prediction of an increase.
Smart meters, billing and credit requirements
Check the smart meter discount conditions
Valda’s 2026 terms include a 10% smart meter discount in quoted charges. They allow removal of that discount after the specified three-month period where the stated conditions apply, including obstructive or unreasonable behaviour concerning installation. This should not be described as an automatic penalty for every installation delay.
Before signing, establish whether your existing meter is suitable, whether an appointment is required and how any installation difficulty will be recorded. Keep appointment confirmations and correspondence.
Confirm advance payment or monthly billing
Valda’s current comparison page describes monthly billing, with collection 10 days after invoicing. A separate SmartChoice page describes buying energy credit in advance and making a first payment before supply starts.
Those arrangements have different effects on cash flow. Ask which applies to your offer, what initial payment is due and how payments change when usage rises. A forecast monthly payment is also different from a fixed energy bill: using more energy can still increase your total cost.
Does Valda Energy accept businesses with bad credit?
Valda markets SmartChoice to customers with all credit scores. However, its current SME terms permit credit checks and requirements for a revised payment plan, credit support or a minimum credit balance. Acceptance and the required arrangements should be confirmed for your business.
This is especially relevant to start-ups or companies with limited trading history. Our guide to business energy with bad credit explains the options to compare.
Is Valda Energy electricity renewable?
Valda Renewable offers certificate-backed renewable electricity. Valda’s standard disclosed fuel mix is different.
For electricity supplied between April 2025 and March 2026, Valda published this supplier fuel mix:
| Fuel source | Valda Energy | Published UK average |
|---|---|---|
| Coal | 11% | 4.7% |
| Natural gas | 63% | 31.4% |
| Nuclear | 7% | 13.7% |
| Renewables | 14% | 48.0% |
| Other | 5% | 2.2% |
Its disclosure also reports carbon dioxide emissions of 380 g/kWh, compared with a UK average of 179 g/kWh for that reporting period. The renewable product has a separate 100% renewable disclosure.
Valda explains that its renewable upgrade matches consumption with Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin, or REGOs. It is available to new and existing SME customers through an uplift to the quoted unit rate. Obtain the actual uplift and supporting documentation before deciding.
For example, an illustrative 0.5p/kWh premium adds £125 a year at 25,000 kWh. This is a calculation example, not Valda’s published premium.
For a business with environmental reporting requirements, compare the evidence, reporting period and additional cost alongside the headline renewable percentage. Our green business energy guide explains the different approaches.
Valda Energy customer reviews and Trustpilot rating
The following is a snapshot of Valda’s Trustpilot profile checked on 16 October 2026. Ratings, review numbers and response statistics change.
| Selected Trustpilot indicator | Displayed figure |
|---|---|
| TrustScore | 4.4/5 |
| Total reviews | 6,860 |
| Five-star reviews | 73% |
| One-star reviews | 20% |
| Negative reviews receiving a company response | 97% |
| Typical company response time shown | Within 48 hours |
The profile contains praise for helpful staff, account administration and resolving queries. Critical feedback includes billing complications and difficulty resolving some account issues. These are reviewers’ reported experiences, rather than independently established findings about every account.
The combination of a strong TrustScore and a sizeable one-star share makes the underlying reviews worth reading. Look particularly for recent accounts of the process you are assessing: opening an account, correcting a bill, receiving a refund or moving premises.
A company response on Trustpilot is also different from a resolved complaint. The figures do not establish a complaint rate per customer, independently verified resolution times or whether a particular tariff is competitively priced.
Valda Energy renewal, cancellation and moving premises
Start by identifying your applicable contract version. Valda publishes new SME terms for agreements from 5 May 2026, corporate terms from 6 May 2026, and separate legacy SmartChoice documents. Its terms directory assigns the SME product to microbusiness consumers and the corporate product to non-microbusiness consumers. Confirm your classification in the welcome pack or proposal.
What happens when the fixed term ends?
The current SME terms provide for notice of the next fixed price period’s charges at least 60 days before expiry, and allow departure during that subsequent period. Agree the actual switch date and retain the notification.
As a practical buying timetable, begin comparing around three months before expiry. This gives you time to resolve missing meter information and compare different contract lengths. The three-month suggestion is our planning recommendation, not a universal contractual deadline.
Can you cancel early?
Valda’s switching FAQ states that its business deals do not offer a cooling-off period, including agreements made by telephone. Check the full offer before agreeing it.
The May 2026 corporate terms define a termination fee including £250 per affected supply point, plus qualifying costs, losses or expenses. They can apply where early release is agreed or the required change-of-occupancy notice is not given. This is a corporate provision, not a universal £250 exit price for all Valda customers.
If you are moving, give notice promptly and keep dated meter photographs, tenancy or sale documents, and the incoming occupier’s details. Request written confirmation of the closing date and final balance. Our moving premises and new business supply guide explains the wider process.
How to compare Valda Energy with other suppliers
Obtain quotations using the same consumption and start date. Then compare the scope of the price and the total cost, rather than treating every quotation labelled “fixed” as equivalent.
| Comparison factor | What to match across quotations |
|---|---|
| Annual usage | The same kWh forecast for each fuel and meter |
| Time-of-use rates | The same day, night and weekend consumption split |
| Contract dates | The same start date and comparable term |
| Standing charges | Every daily charge for every supply point |
| Non-commodity costs | Which are included, adjustable or charged separately |
| Metering and capacity | Equivalent metering, availability and other site charges |
| Renewable option | Comparable certification and the full premium |
| Payment arrangements | Initial payment, collection timing and credit requirements |
| Broker fees | Commission, separate fees and the suppliers included |
The starting calculation for a single-rate supply is:
Annual energy and standing-charge cost = annual kWh × unit rate in pence ÷ 100 + 365 × daily standing charge in pence ÷ 100.
Add the other applicable components afterwards. For a multi-rate meter, calculate each consumption period separately before adding the daily and site charges.
Small differences matter. At 50,000 kWh, a 1p unit-rate difference is £500 a year. At 100,000 kWh, it is £1,000. Conversely, a 50p daily-charge difference is £182.50 a year regardless of consumption.
If a broker’s commission were 0.5p/kWh, a business using 25,000 kWh would pay £125 annually through that component, or £375 over three identical consumption years. This is an illustration of how to assess disclosed commission, not a statement about a particular Valda or EnergyCosts quotation.
Compare business electricity quotes and business gas quotes separately, then assess any combined billing benefit. Ask the comparison provider which suppliers it actually covers.
VAT and Climate Change Levy on Valda Energy bills
Tax treatment can materially change the amount payable. As at publication:
- Standard-rated business supplies: VAT is generally 20%.
- Qualifying electricity supplies in Great Britain: a temporary 0% rate applies from 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027, replacing the usual reduced rate during that period.
- Qualifying gas supplies: the reduced VAT rate remains 5%.
HMRC’s small-quantity thresholds include electricity averaging no more than 33 kWh per day, expressed as 1,000 kWh per month, and piped gas averaging no more than 145 kWh per day, expressed as 4,397 kWh per month. Other qualifying-use rules also apply. Ask Valda to confirm the treatment for the relevant billing period.
For non-exempt electricity and gas, the main Climate Change Levy rate is 0.801p/kWh from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027. This is £200.25 at 25,000 kWh, before VAT where applicable.
For an illustrative 30-day electricity bill using 2,000 kWh at 24p/kWh plus £1 per day, with full CCL and 20% VAT:
| Bill component | Amount |
|---|---|
| Electricity consumption | £480.00 |
| Standing charges | £30.00 |
| Climate Change Levy | £16.02 |
| Subtotal before VAT | £526.02 |
| VAT at 20% | £105.20 |
| Total | £631.22 |
This is a tax calculation example, not a Valda offer. It assumes no further charges. Confirm tax eligibility and compare quotations using a consistent basis.
Business energy contracts are outside Ofgem’s domestic energy price cap. Household capped rates therefore do not provide a contractual ceiling for Valda business tariffs.

Valda’s published procedure allows escalation to the Energy Ombudsman for eligible disputes after eight weeks without resolution, or following a deadlock letter. It states that a complaint should be referred within 12 months of the deadlock letter.
Small-business eligibility for the Ombudsman includes either:
- Fewer than 50 employees, together with annual turnover no higher than £6.5 million or a balance sheet total no higher than £5 million.
- Annual electricity consumption no higher than 200,000 kWh.
- Annual gas consumption no higher than 500,000 kWh.
The Ombudsman’s scheme rules and the circumstances of the dispute also apply.
How to get a Valda Energy quote or switch
Prepare the following before requesting a quotation:
- Your business name, supply address and postcode.
- Your electricity MPAN and gas MPRN, as applicable.
- Annual consumption for each meter, with time-of-use data where relevant.
- Your current supplier, contract end date and intended start date.
- Your current unit rates, daily charges and other recurring charges.
- Meter details, payment preferences and any renewable electricity requirement.
Ask for the proposal, applicable terms and annual cost breakdown before accepting. Keep copies of the offer and confirmation, then check the opening reading and first invoice against them.
If a switch fails, obtain the precise reason from the suppliers. Our guide to a blocked business energy switch explains common registration, contract and debt issues.
Is Valda Energy a good business energy supplier?
Valda offers a credible SME proposition built around smart metering, digital account management and a choice of tariff structures. Its lower-standing-charge option is worth assessing for low-consumption sites, and the renewable upgrade gives customers a defined green electricity choice.
The decision should rest on the written annual cost, adjustable charges, payment requirements and applicable terms. Recent customer feedback provides additional context, particularly around billing and account administration.
Request a current Valda quotation alongside other suitable offers. Choose the contract that fits your consumption, cash flow and need for price protection; the lowest advertised unit rate may not produce the lowest complete cost.
Valda Energy FAQs
Yes. Valda Energy Limited is an active UK company, number 11212563, incorporated on 19 February 2018. It launched its business energy supply operation in October 2019. These corporate facts establish its identity; the suitability of a quotation still depends on its prices, terms and your requirements.
There is no single cheapest supplier for every business. At 25,000 kWh, a 1p/kWh difference changes annual energy costs by £250, while an extra £1 daily charge adds £365. Compare current written offers using identical consumption, contract dates, payment arrangements and charge inclusions.
Valda has published a SmartChoice Zero product with a 0p daily standing charge and a higher unit rate incorporating those costs. Its current Standing Charge Saver description promises a lower daily charge. Confirm current availability and compare the complete annual price for your consumption. Sources: SmartChoice Zero announcement and Standing Charge Saver.
Valda’s switching FAQ says its business deals do not offer a cooling-off period, including telephone agreements. You should therefore not assume a domestic-style 14-day cancellation right applies. Ask for the written terms before acceptance and obtain confirmation of any expressly agreed cancellation or early-release provision. Source: Valda’s switching FAQ.
Valda’s published proposition focuses on business electricity and gas for SMEs across England, Scotland and Wales. It is not presented as a mainstream household tariff service. How this Valda Energy review was researched
We checked Valda’s product pages, deemed schedule, current and legacy terms, fuel mix and contact information, alongside Companies House, Trustpilot, Ofgem, HMRC and Energy Ombudsman guidance on 16 October 2026. Calculations use the stated assumptions. No live contracted quotation was obtained; historical industry benchmarks and hypothetical examples are identified throughout.
